Errol Pires is a master craftsman in the art of ply-split braiding.
He graduated from NID in 1975 and worked in the textile industry for almost a decade. In the 1980s, he made a trip to Jaisalmer where he met Ishwar Singh Bhatti — a peon who went on to become a master of the now-disappearing art of ply-split braiding.
Errol learned the art from this guru and has been working on it for decades since, experimenting with different forms and most recently creating seamless garments.
He rejoined NID in 1984 as a professor in the Textile and Photography department and retired in 2012.
