FAQ: What’s a makerspace?
“The past decade has seen the sudden, dramatic appearance of community spaces offering public, shared access to high-end manufacturing equipment.”
Confused about all these spaces? Makezine distinguishes between makerspaces, hackerspaces, and fab labs— with a focus on the USA and Europe. (Stay tuned for more about the global maker community…)
But don’t get bogged down by definitions— come to MakerFest to experience one of these spaces for yourself! We’re hosting a mini-Fab Lab (staffed by actual MIT people) and pop-up makerspace on 4-5 January, in a large field on the NID campus. Our space features arts and crafts, 3-D printers, electronics that beep, blink, and whirr, programmable mini-computers like Arduinos and Raspberry Pis, soldering irons, duct tape and googly eyes, and experienced makers to help bring your ideas to life.
